Are All Dermal Fillers the Same?

Although aging affects many parts of the body, it is often most noticeable in your appearance. Two of the most common complaints are wrinkles and sagging skin. Fortunately, dermal fillers can help restore volume and shave years off your face.

At Plateroti Dermatology in Templeton, California, Dr. Carmelo Plateroti and our highly trained team offer the most up-to-date dermatologic and aesthetic care using both Western medicine treatments and the best holistic practices. Whether you're suffering from a dermatologic issue like acne or are seeking to turn back the clock on your appearance with an aesthetic procedure like Botox®, platelet-rich plasma, or dermal fillers, we can help.

Dermal fillers

Many people may focus on wrinkles and hollowed cheeks when they think of an aging appearance, but in reality, these are both symptoms of another phenomenon — loss of volume. This occurs from a decrease in collagen and fat, which help plump up everything from the forehead and temples to the cheeks and mouth. Dermal fillers, the most common cosmetic procedure in the United States after Botox injections, can help remedy this problem.

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected under the skin and can be made from different ingredients. The most popular type used today, hyaluronic acid, is a complex sugar that’s naturally found in many of the body's tissues and lasts longer than collagen.

The aim of fillers is to increase lost volume thereby smoothing lines and softening creases as well as enhancing facial contours. They can be used on the cheeks, lips, and other areas with significant wrinkles.

In addition to different ingredients, dermal fillers can vary by what location they are best suited to treat.  For example:

Wrinkles

Juvéderm offers several products for treating common wrinkles, including those in the nasolabial folds from the corners of the nose to the edge of the lips. These include Juvéderm Ultra®, Juvéderm Ultra Plus®, and Juvéderm Vollure™. The first two help combat wrinkles for six months to a year while Juvéderm Vollure can last up to 18 months.

Cheeks

Restoring volume to the cheeks can make a person look up to five years younger. Juvéderm Voluma® works especially well on the mid-face area and can last for up to two years.

Lips

There are two options when it comes to fillers for the lips. Juvéderm Ultra can add definition and volume with its thicker formula, and Juvéderm Volbella® is great for filling in small lip lines with its thinner formula and more subtle volume. Both options last about a year when used in the lips.
